Understanding Web Hosting: A Beginner's Guide

Every website needs somewhere to live. Web hosting is that place: a server that stores your pages, images, and databases, and hands them to anyone who asks for them.

Hosting is also the part of a website that first-time buyers understand least, which is why plans are so easy to mis-sell. This guide explains what you are actually renting, what each term on the plan means, and how to check an offer before you pay for it.

What Is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is a service that rents you space and computing power on a server that stays connected to the internet around the clock. Your website files sit on that server, and the server sends them to a visitor’s browser every time someone opens your site. Without hosting, your files exist only on your own computer, where nobody else can reach them.

A domain name is a separate thing. The domain is your address, the hosting is the building. You can buy them from the same provider, and most beginners do, but they are two different services and they can be moved independently.

How Web Hosting Works

When someone types your domain into their browser:

  • The browser asks the DNS system for your domain, which works like an internet phone book
  • DNS returns the IP address of your hosting server
  • The browser opens a connection to that server
  • The server sends back your website files
  • The browser assembles them and the page appears

All of this normally finishes in well under a second. The slow part is rarely DNS. It is usually the server taking too long to build the page, or the page being much heavier than it needs to be. We wrote about that in why your website is slow.

The Main Types of Hosting, in Short

Four arrangements cover almost everything sold to small businesses:

  • Shared hosting. Many sites share one server and its resources. Cheapest, and fine for a small site. If a neighbouring site has a busy day, you can feel it.
  • VPS hosting. You get a reserved slice of a server with guaranteed CPU and memory, plus room to configure things yourself.
  • Dedicated hosting. A whole physical machine for you alone. Maximum control, highest cost.
  • Cloud hosting. Several machines act as one pool, so capacity can grow during a spike instead of falling over.

Managed or Unmanaged: Who Runs the Server?

This is the decision that actually changes your week, and most plan pages bury it. An unmanaged plan rents you the machine. Updates, security patches, backups, firewall rules, and recovery when something breaks are yours to handle. A managed plan rents you the machine plus the administration of it.

Unmanaged is genuinely cheaper on the invoice. It is only cheaper overall if you already know your way around a Linux server and you have time on the day something fails. Our honest advice: if nobody at your company can confidently answer “who patches this server, and when”, buy managed. A cheap unmanaged plan with no one maintaining it is the most expensive hosting there is, because you pay for it in outage.

Hosting Terms You Need to Understand Before You Buy

Plan pages compete on a short list of numbers. Here is what each one actually controls.

  • Storage. Disk space for your files and database, in GB. Whether it is SSD matters more than the number. Most small business sites use only a few GB.
  • Bandwidth. Total data your visitors download in a month. Text-heavy sites use very little. Video and large uncompressed images eat it quickly.
  • Uptime. The share of time the server is reachable, expressed as a percentage. See the table below, because the percentages are less generous than they look.
  • SSL certificate. The thing that puts your site on HTTPS. Browsers now warn visitors on sites without it, so treat it as mandatory rather than an upgrade.
  • CPU and RAM limits. On shared plans these are capped even when they are not advertised. Hitting the cap is what causes a site to crawl at busy moments.
  • Inodes. A count of individual files, not their size. Rarely mentioned, occasionally the limit you hit first if your site generates a lot of small files.
  • Backups. How often a copy is taken, how long copies are kept, and whether restoring one costs extra.

How to Read a Hosting Plan Before You Pay

Six checks, in the order we run them.

  1. Compare the renewal price, not the signup price. Introductory hosting rates are commonly much lower than the renewal rate, and the renewal is what you will pay for years. Find that number before you buy. If a provider makes it hard to find, that is your answer.
  2. Check the term you are being billed for. The headline monthly price often assumes you prepay for one to three years in advance.
  3. Confirm SSL is free and permanent. Free certificates are the standard now. Paying a yearly fee for a basic certificate is a sign of an old-fashioned provider.
  4. Ask what the backup policy actually is. Frequency, retention, and whether you can restore yourself without a support ticket or a fee.
  5. Ask whether migration is included. Moving an existing site is routine work, and many providers do it free to win the business. Web Roots includes free migration with no downtime.

Where Should Your Server Be?

Physical distance costs time. Every request has to travel to the server and back, so a visitor in Cairo reaches a server in Europe faster than one in North America, and a visitor in the Gulf is closer again to a regional or European data centre than to a US one.

Pick the location closest to most of your visitors, not closest to you. A business in Egypt selling to customers in Egypt and the Gulf is usually best served from a nearby or European data centre. If your audience is genuinely global, a CDN in front of the site matters more than the origin’s location, because static files then get served from wherever the visitor is.
